Outdoor Climbing

The Zipper

The Zipper is located in the Chattahoochee River National Park, off of I-285, north of Atlanta. Essentially a large, tilted boulder split by perfect handcrack, the Zipper is a popular place to practice the art of clean aid climbing. First climbed on aid by Dempsey Medford and Rick Hauert in 1979, the route was originally tried free by Jeff Scully and Chris Watford, to no avail. Atlanta climbers Phil Fisher and Robyn Erbesfield freed the moves to the lip, but soon lost interest. In 1985, Rob Robinson, succeeded in freeing the route, giving it a grade of 5.11d/12a.
